Annie somehow manage to elude the babysitter this morning and hasn't come home. We have walked the street for hours looking and haven't found her yet. I plan on checking with the animal shelter in the morning.

We live off Hacks Cross near 385 behind Captain D's. If you know anyone that lives near here please forward Annie's picture.

She has a fungus infection on her back that we gave been treating with antibiotics. She didn't have her collar on, but The hair on her chest is stained pink from her harness.

Felicia needs a foster family ASAP!

Felicia is writing in hopes that someone can help this girl or put me in touch with someone who can. This 6 month old (approx), female, white and tan mix needs rescue by Friday or she will have to go to the shelter.

She was hit by a car about 5 weeks ago. A kind lady picked her up out of the road where she was unable to move herself and no one would stop for her.

The vet that I work for has taken on all medical expenses with bracing her leg, stitching her wounds and medications. His only request was that we had 6 weeks to find her a home, and that time is up on Friday.

We have given her all vacinations and she is HW negative. If a rescue is willing to take her, we will spay her free of charge.

If any one can help, we would be very grateful. We have tried to put the word out for the past few weeks that she was in need of a home, to no success.

Please contact me with any question, 901-219-4446.

Thank you,

Felicia

Help Storm find a family! So sweet!

Found Storm in the storm on Monday, April 14. He was scared ,hungry, and very dirty. We took him home, gave him baths and pulled about 25 ticks off of him. He was very weak, we had to hold his head up to eat. Three days later he has gone from this scared puppy to a happy puppy full of energy.

The girls take him on walks without a leash and he stays with them. He also listens and has learned the house rules. His favorite thing though is to be held or to lay on the girls when they are watching TV. He also gets along with the other dogs.

We think he might be about 4-6 months old. His health looks good but we haven't taken him to the vet, at this time we can not pay his vet bills. Could you please post to have him foster/adopted, our daughters are starting to get attached and we can not keep him.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Storm, please contact Kim Perez, 901-574-3049 or perezmk@comcast.net

If you cannot foster, but would like to donate toward Storm's vet bills, please email perezmk@comcast.net

Rango needs a family, ASAP!

Parker

Rparker703@yahoo.com

Rango is about 3yo, 50lbs. Rango has been fully vetted, I will sponsor his Health Certificate for travel and have wonderful rescue friends that help with transport.

We’re begging – please, do you have a place for gentleman sweetie Rango? Thank you for considering Rango.

When I visit Rango, he stand and walks to the back of his kennel, like a true gentleman. I open the door, only then he walks to the front and lays a big lick on my face. Rango and I then walk outside together and he always stays right with me. Sometimes Rango will sit beside me and just stare. I often wonder if it's because he is thinking "what's going to happen to me". I brush him, rub his legs and kiss his face. Rango just sits and soaks all this up. He has a great nose; he can sniff me out wherever I go. I sometimes hide from him and here he comes, nose to the ground sniffing for me.! He cannot see out of his right eye, but that does not hinder his smelling ability. Rango enjoys receiving affection, and he also enjoys giving affection. He is so laid back. He seems to think everything out before he acts on it - smart. This special guy so deserves a home. The right family will never want for love with Rango there. Rango is a gentleman and a love.

Tunica HS needs our help!

As you may know, the Tunica Humane Society is a wonderful no-kill animal shelter in Tunica County. They will soon be moving to an indoor sanctuary but that may take a few more months. They were founded in August 2008 and since that time, their dogs have been cared for in outdoor shelters by a very compassionate and wonderful (but small) group of volunteers.
Below is a link to a story about the Tunica Humane Society called "Winter Chill Leaves Tunica Shelter Dogs Out In The Cold" and there's a video too that appeared last month on ABC Channel 24.
They desperately need foster Moms and Dads who can temporarily house their dogs and puppies during the critically cold days ahead. If you can help, please contact Sandy Williams at 662-519-1700 or email swrealty1@hotmail.com.

Risky needs a family!

Meet Risky :)

He was surrendered by his owner to the Memphis Animal Shelter. He came in neutered so he will just need a rabies shot and a microchip to go home.. He sits on command, like on a dime! He is very expressive as you can tell from his picture! He seems VERY willing to follow commands.

Risky's adoption will require a background check and a home check to make sure secure fencing is in place for his safety. Please come in and meet this total sweetheart. He is waiting in cage 11 in the adoption area, and his id number is 220490.

Malamute/Husky needs foster/adoption

He is half Alaskan Malamute and half Siberian Husky. He is in need of a foster or forever home. He is being boarded at a vet’s office and the bills are getting to be too much for the kind person who is paying the bills. Rather than allowing him go to the animal shelter, this kind person has had him boarded for several weeks.
This sweet boy has been neutered. He gets along well with female dogs but not male....he wants to be the alpha. He is very affectionate and loves kids. He is around a year old.

Who is Jenna, and what is the point of the "dog blog"....

I am pretty sure I have never uploaded a photo of myself, or pointed out the reason for this blog. If I have, then feel free to skip this post & check out some more interesting ones below! If not..enjoy!

This is my family (l-r) my sister, mom, dad, me, and my brother... and most importantly Duke, Sam, & Angel... our pups! My family may seem average, but we have strong opinions when it comes to animals, animal cruelty, and animal advocacy. My mom started this with our family many years ago when she would stop doing anything to speak up for an abused animal, or rescue a pup from the street! Thanks mom!
Everyone in the family has done something to educate someone else or save a life. None is greater or less than in my opinion. Natalie (my sister) has been the pioneer in pit bull education for our family; educating everyone in her path on exactly who this "breed" really is. Natalie donated to some amazing organizations in honor of me for Christmas, and I am so excited to share these with you! The first one is Rescue Chocolate, a website dedicated to selling chocolate & other gifts while donating 100% net profits to animal rescues around the country!

The second gift was a calendar from The Unexpected Pit Bull! I will keep and cherish this calendar forever...the stories and pictures are amazing! All net profits are donated to Pit Bull rescue, education, and advocacy organizations. It makes a great gift for the Pit Bull or animal lover in your life!

Now meet Duke: our pit :)
I would love to post one of the million silly pictures I have of him, considering he really is a giant baby, and his nickname is "chicken little" because he is scared of anything..but I will refrain! Duke was found one sleeting night in February a few years ago, scrounging for food in a trash can..by none other than my sister! This was a time when we had two large breed dogs already, and we watched the news so we also believed most dogs could be saved, except for those scary pit bulls, of course! So when my sister called my parents to explain she found a "chocolate lab puppy"...they were more than happy to give that boy a home, until she pulled up and we saw this face pop up in the back seat! After much deliberation, education (first on our part), and surveying our "normal dogs" with the "scary pit bull"..we decided to keep him! This was in 2007.

These four years have FLOWN BY! After this is when I adopted Genevieve & then was constantly defending pit bulls & dogs from shelters. I was becoming so irritated and exhausted from defending these dogs, that I decided to start a blog for my rantings and for the dogs needing homes.

THAT is how the dog blog came about :) I post as often as my schedule allows, and as often as I get emails about all of these pups I care about so much. I would appreciate if you checked back often to see who needs a home, who needs to be found, what animal laws are coming up in your next election, dr jon's tips, and who you can donate to locally if need be. These are just a few of the things I post.

The quote that sums up my urge to change the way things are done incorrectly with dogs & with the negative viewpoints of the media is this: "the most damaging phrase in the English language is 'it's always been done that way'"

Brindle pit mix needs a new family!

**I received an email about a lost dog that this woman found, she is a brindle pit mix.

My daughter found this puppy yesterday - no tags, no collar:

I picked this lil baby girl up while she was wondering around the parking lot at school the other day, pretty sure she is a boxer/pit mix and she is not spayed. She is a sweet baby girl, probably only 8 to 10 months old. If you (or somebody you know) wants a pup, please come see her before you go anywhere else! She IS housebroken, but doesn't have much other training. Loving and goofy, loves to give kisses. Please let me know if you can help her find a good home!

The contact person is Shirley Ford at sford0608@hotmail.com

Can you donate/adopt/foster these neglected & abused 8wk old puppies?

I received this email about these puppies, but I will not post pictures because of the graphic nature. We know there are monsters out there terrorizing animals, and these photos proved it. If you want to foster, adopt, or donate to these poor pit bull puppies, please contact or spread the word!

3 severely beaten babies fighting for their lives--- story below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Southaven, MS
Here are the pictures. These girls were dumped on the side of the road, put in a box with a garbage bag around it. A good Samaritan saw the bag move and brought them to animal control. Animal control called me this morning and pleaded with me to take them.There were were four originally but one did not make it through the first night. We believe they were severely beaten or more likely bait pups, as their head have bites all over them. Their heads are swollen, full of of puss, and infected. The blue on has a fractured skull as well. As of now they seem happy even though they have been through so much. We believe they are close to 8 weeks old.
We need to see if we can help raise approx $500 to help with medical bills and expenses. I know things are really tight right now being that it's Christmas- but believe me- every dollar will matter!!!
Tunica HS needs you to adopt!
Attached are photos of some dogs and puppies who need your help who are at the Tunica Humane Society.
There are some little pups who are snug in their houses with the hundreds of blankets donated to the shelter. The little black and white one looks like a Border Collie Mix. A heartfelt thank you to everyone that has sent help their way. We just need to get these puppies into a forever home. They were abandoned on Thanksgiving evening. Little Abbie Moore and Lainey Goodson who presented $75.68 to the Tunica Humane Society from a fundraiser where they raised money to help the dogs at the THS. They came by Hollywood Feed last Saturday and made all the dogs feel very special with their love. They even spent their own money on treats for the adoptable babies. A special thank you to Abbi and Lainey.
This is Petey and he needs a loving home as soon as possible, either a forever home or a foster home. He is a great little Pembroke Welsh Corgi mix and he is extremely stressed at our shelter. But when Sandy Williams and her volunteers took him to Hollywood Feed in Cordova last Saturday, he instantly became a lap dog. Very cuddly and great on a leash. (I can personally verify this as I walked him). This little guy is going to make someone a constant companion for life.
Please help to spread the word. All these dogs are outside in this freezing weather and they need a warm home. If you can help, please contact Sandy Williams at any of the phone numbers listed below:
Can you donate to Chester? or adopt one of his pets?
Chester Burns is unique... He lives on a fixed income due to disability. He spends almost every moment of his day and night helping animals and fostering. He gives to the animals until he has almost nothing left to take care of himself.
Every time there is a critical rescue or foster needed – he is there. He was the first to go out to find the mutilated pit puppy. He went out for us every day and night the past few weeks rescuing freezing, injured, starving and suffering animals.
He fosters, seeks medical care, loves and nurtures as many as 40 animals at a time.
Many of the animals he rescues – nobody else adopts – like the beautiful pit bull he took out of a fighting pit with gashes in his body – who is now an extremely gentle loving baby.
A couple months ago he emailed me a photo of some of his “babies” sleeping on a bed during a rainy day. They had arranged themselves like sardines on the bed – every one trying to fit.....the puppy mill dogs...the injured dogs....the abandoned dogs.
I wrote to a dog bed manufacturer about him and they donated a bunch of fluffy dog beds to Chester’s babies. In the lower photos you can see them the day they were “moving in” to their new dog hotel. Chester said they all went in the new beds early in the afternoon and stayed there the rest of the day.
Chester is living on virtually nothing so he can provide for these animals. If you have a couple dollars to spare – PLEASE donate it to Chester Burn’s Babies. Anything at all will help him....and his babies.
How to do CPR on your pup
As much as we try to protect our pets, accidents do happen. So, it is important to be as prepared as reasonably possible. One way to be prepared is to know how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
CPR is an emergency technique used to help someone whose heart and/or breathing has stopped. Although somewhat modified, the same techniques used for people - rescue breathing and chest compressions - can be used to help treat an animal in distress.
The first lesson to know about CPR is that it doesn't restart a stopped heart. The purpose of CPR, in both humans and animals, is to keep them alive until the heart begins beating on its own or until a cardiac defibrillator can be used. In people, about 15 percent of those getting CPR actually survive. In animals, CPR is frequently unsuccessful, even if performed by a trained veterinarian. Even so, attempting CPR will give your pet a fighting chance.
Here are instructions and photos to show you how.
Common problems you don't want your pet to have!
1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) - This disease is most often genetic and cannot be prevented. It is most common in Dachshund dogs due to a genetic problem with the disc. You can minimize the chance of this problem by preventing your dog from jumping off the bed or furniture. Provide a ramp if needed to assist your dog getting off and on furniture.
2. Gastric Torsion (Bloat) - This is a life-threatening condition resulting from a distended stomach that rotates into an abnormal position (torsion). Untreated, it results in death. It is most common in large breed, deep-chested dogs (such as the Great Dane). Many veterinarians will prophylactically "pexy" or stabilize the stomach to prevent it from occurring in susceptible breeds. If you own a Great Dane, standard Poodle, Saint Bernard, Gordon setter, Irish setter, Doberman pinscher, Old English sheepdog, or Weimaraner, you may want to discuss this with your veterinarian. Another thing you can do to help prevent this condition is to divide meals into 2 or 3 meals per day rather than one large meal. Feed a mixture of canned food and dry food. Avoid elevated feeders. Any diet changes should be made gradually over a period of 3 to 5 days. Feed susceptible dogs individually and if possible, in a quiet location. When buying a dog, ask about family history of bloat and stay away from breed lines with a prominent history.
3. Foreign Body Ingestion (Small Intestine) - This condition is entirely preventable. A foreign body is caused by the ingestion of an object that can't pass through the intestine. Common objects include underwear, socks, pantyhose, coins and toys. How can you prevent it? Closely supervise your dog to ensure that he doesn't ingest household items. Provide durable toys such as the Kong®. If your dog chews and ingests anything - call your veterinarian or local emergency clinic immediately.
4. Cruciate Rupture - This condition is due to a rupture of a ligament in the knee. It is difficult to prevent, as you cannot predict how or when it will happen. It can occur to any dog at any time when running or playing. You may minimize the changes by resting your dog when he is tired. Don't over exercise him.
5. Foreign Body Ingestion (Stomach) - This condition is also preventable. This is similar to condition #4 but the foreign object is caught in the stomach rather than the intestine. Keep all items that your dog might ingest out of his reach. Observe his behavior when playing with toys to ensure he doesn't try to "eat" them.
6. Pin in Broken Limb - This condition is a fracture or broken bone, which is treated with a surgical pin to stabilize the bone. Broken bones can be preventable. Many broken bones in dogs occur from being hit by a car. You can prevent this by ensuring your dog is on a leash and does not run free. In small or toy dogs, broken bones can result from being dropped or stepped on. Take special care with small dogs.
Your pet is sick & you can't afford it...
What if your pet becomes sick or is critically injured and needs expensive care that you can't afford?
What can you do?
This is a common problem that veterinarians face. And trust me, it is not a problem that we enjoy. Veterinarians would rather work on making your pet better, not deal with the financial issues that involve good pet care.
So, what can you do if your pet has a problem that you can't afford? I'll give you some tips.
1. Credit cards and checks. If this is an option, ask the clinic if they accept checks and credit cards. This can help in some situations.
2. Care credit. Ask if the hospital accepts "care credit". Care credit is a line of credit that you can apply for on an emergency basis and it can give you immediate access to a credit card with a credit line (often at a fairly reasonable rate).
3. Most vet hospitals will give you time to make calls to family and friends or to visit a bank machine to come up with the required resources or deposit.
4. Consider other options. It may be that you can cut corners in some manner now to get you to a local shelter or humane society that may provide less expensive treatment or offer billing for additional tests.
5. Finally, if unexpected expenses are a hardship for you, the very BEST thing you can do for your pet is to get pet insurance early, before your pet has a problem. Get it when your pet is young and healthy and the premiums are reasonable. Also, consider taking advantage of the preventative care options that some companies offer.
Yes, I frequently recommend that my readers should at least consider pet insurance. I do this because I've seen the lives of many pets saved because their owners had the financial ability to do the best for their pet.
Today I encourage you to take a minute to educate yourself about pet insurance and learn how it can give you peace of mind knowing that you will be able to provide the best medical care for your dog.
So take a few minutes to learn about the many benefits of pet insurance and get a FREE quote. Go to: petinsurance.com
What to do if your dog is bleeding.
Last week I stopped by the local emergency clinic. A gentleman and his wife brought in their dog into the clinic because he was "bleeding". They didn't know what had happened but there was blood everywhere. Literally, they were arguing about something and it was hard to get a good history about the dog.
We initially thought that the dog had been hit by a car. The dog had blood on his head, in his ears, in his mouth, and his fur was covered with blood. His vital signs were stable so we proceeded to try to wipe him down to find the source of blood. Believe it or not - all of that blood was coming from a cut on his foot.
The dog had cut a big arterial blood vessel and proceeded to bleed for 3 hours before coming to the emergency clinic. The owners were hysterical.
To make a long story short, this dog had lost a lot of blood. Many times when a dog is bleeding it LOOKS like a lot of blood but it really isn't. In this case, it really was.
We sedated the dog and sutured the wound. After surgery, we monitored his blood counts and they dropped so low that he required a blood transfusion.
We spoke with the owners more and they said that the dog had been in the yard when they noticed the foot bleeding, but they thought that it would stop. It didn't. And 3 hours later they ended up here in the emergency clinic.
The key lesson? As responsible pet owners we must know what to do if our dog is bleeding. The treatment doesn't have to be fancy but effective. Keep your dog calm. When you see where the blood is coming from, get a clean cloth or towel and apply gently pressure on the wound. Don't use a tourniquet. Just apply gentle pressure and go see your veterinarian.
I also strongly recommend that you keep a first aid kit for your dog handy. Take a minute and consider what should be in your dog's home to help him in the case of an emergency. Look at the list of what should be in a dog first aid kit and put it on your list so you can pick it up the next time you are at the store.
Abandoned pup!
A co-worker of mine has had their next door neighbor abandoned a dog in their
back yard. The dog has been there for over a month with NO shelter.
Someone drops food in the backyard several times a week. It is not know if
it is the homeowner or other neighbors. The last time my co-worker saw the
owner, he told them that they needed to take care of the dog and they
continue to say someone is coming to "pick it up". But they never do. The
dog has been sleeping in the cold with no shelter at all.
I am completely willing to pay all vet bills to get the dog checked out,
healed (if needed), and current on all shots. The dog is < 25 lb. black lab
mix (of course) from what I am told. I have not been able to get him to
take a picture of it for me.
If I can take it to my vet and have it check out, etc. Would you in any way
be able to help by taking it in or finding a foster? I have 4 dogs, an
elderly mother with 2 cats, and cannot take in anything at this time...but I
can certainly help financially.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
Pups needing rescue
A postman who lives in Millington has collected about a dozen strays from along his route over the years but now the neighbor has complained about barking, and Animal Control has given him until Dec 13 to get rid of the dogs or they will be removed and taken to the shelter.
We still have time to try to get these dogs into rescue groups, but more info is needed. Can someone go check out these dogs this weekend? Need each dog identified with a photo and info regarding M/F and socialization. Please let me know if you can help.
Can you help the pregnant beagle?
There is a very pregnant Beagle by the railroad tracks on Fite Road between the Memphis Motorsports Park & DuPont plant at 2751 Fite Road.
She has a reflective collar on. She has been seen at the railroad tracks and also near the abandoned salvage yard. She needs more help for babies to make it through cold weather coming in
Can anyone please help this Mama dog?
Request for puppy chow donations!
The puppies at Tails of Hope Dog Rescue need your food :) They have several puppies who are rescue babies and more coming in from a puppy mill. Can you please donate a bag or two? If so, please drop it off at:
Am. Staffordshire needs a family or transport!
I received this email recently...
Urgent help for Harley. We thought we had an interested party and it did not pan out. Please post and cross post. If you know of anyone who can foster him or give him the forever home he deserves (as they all do) please tell them to contact me ASAP. (mad6819@yahoo.com) He does not have much time.
He was found wandering. He had an embedded collar in his neck. Possibility he might have been shot but he is healing nicely. He is approximately three years old. He is Heart Worm NEGATIVE. He gets along with cats and other dogs. We went to the shelter to play with him and his personality is calm. We took him through the cat area and he could have cared less. There were two cats in the lobby of the shelter and he went up to them and just kept on going. He loves on other dogs, grooming them. No aggression at all. Also his ears are cut back.
I will pay for his spaying and vetting. I will also help with the transport (he is in Northern Mississippi) as much as I can. PLEASE POST AND CROSS POST for he does not have much time.
Semper needs out of the shelter!
We have another little one who has tested heartworm positive :-(. This little one was surrendered to the shelter. He is listed as a Scottish Terrier, which he obviously is not. He is already neutered, but has tested positive for heartworms.
His name is "Semper", and he is two years old. His id number is 215592, and he is being held right now in the observation area hoping we can find him help. When he was surrendered, the owner indicated he is house trained.
If you can help this sweet one you will need to have a vet write a letter stating that he will be treated for heartworms. He is already neutered, so he can leave the shelter immediately.
Sweet Miss Daisy wants a family so bad!
A picture is worth a thousand words and this one just pulls at my heart strings. It looks like this dog is saying, "Will you please take me home?"
This beautiful fur baby named Miss Daisy has been at the Memphis Animal Shelter since early June and it's almost September!
She is a sweet sweet dog who behaved PERFECTLY today at the MAS Pet Adoption at Hollywood Feed. She loved all the attention she got, and she got along really well with every person and dog she met.
She weighs approximately 50 lbs and is about a year old, had all her vetting done and is ready to leave the shelter! The MAS volunteers had some fairly "vocal" dogs today, but Miss Daisy sat patiently in her cage waiting for her new home although I don't she got adopted. Her ID number is 210986.
